Great article, Kevin! I appreciate your research. In my opinion, the “Project We Love” badge has become progressively less important the more campaigns I launch. That’s due to the inconsistencies I have seen with campaigns that do and do not receive it. I even had a campaign get the badge prior to launch!
Thanks, Jonathan! The prelaunch PWL happened for me once, too, and it occasionally falls to me still, but it's totally impossible to predict. There's a better way out there. I appreciate the read and the restack.
Very interesting read. As a super backer I’ve always wondered what went into it. I always wondered if projects worth the potential to make a lot of money are more likely to get projects we love. You know they’d want to promote it more to help it (and them) make more money
I love your criteria! A strong focus on the basic components that make a book product, and then delivering on your promises. In particular, "a compelling story, appealing art, fair pricing and a reasonable fulfillment window. The Kickstarter isn't over until you have delivered the goods!
Thanks for the read and for the feedback! Now, if we can just get the entire Kickstarter comics community on board with these basic understandings of how this is supposed to work, right?
This is some much needed perspective, as I am pretty miss and not a lot of hit on Project we Love, but in the end it's as you've described; it doesn't really have much meaning. To me, what's more important is seeing familiar names of backers who return time after time, just because they like what I'm doing.
Thanks! There was definitely a time when I got bummed out when I didn't get the PWL tag, so drilling down to learn how it's actually applied made a huge difference for me, too. I'm glad you like my alternative proposal, and I appreciate your time and your feedback on it. You're 100% right on returning backers being a prime measure of success in self-publishing.
Thanks, Kevin. I haven't received the PWL badge yet, but not too worried about it. I do wonder about its purpose for KS metrics, especially when I've seen comics campaigns get the badge after they hit their funding goal.
Thanks for reading and for the restack! Yeah, I've had projects get PWL the first couple of days of a campaign, and I've had them get it halfway through. I suppose it depends on who's making the call at any particular point in time, how busy they are, and other priorities. But who knows...

For me “Project We Love” used to bring in extra backers, but now it’s very nominal.

"Comic I Like" is a great concept!
