The Top 3 Kickstarter Comics in Each Genre for February, 2025

Since December, 2024, I’ve spent time each day gathering and collating data on each and every crowdfunding campaign launched in the Kickstarter Comics category. Each campaign’s title and direct link goes into an Excel spreadsheet organized by genre, and, as each campaign ends, I enter the final funding amount and number of backers. When all campaigns launched in a particular month are ended, I have summative data on total funding, backer counts, campaign success rates, and other measurables that may then be used for insightful analysis into the current state of the Comics category.

As of this week, all projects launched in February, 2025, are ended, with the exception of one, safely projected to succeed. Regardless of these lingering, 60-day (who does that to themselves?) campaigns, there is great meaning to be extrapolated from the otherwise complete February data set, beginning here with the top performing campaigns in each genre for that month. First, take a look at the 3 highest funded Comics projects overall for February:

  • Gothic Nights Revamped: $80,405 (481 Backers)

  • The Fool, the Absolute Mad Woman - A Sapphic Thriller comic - $54,601 (833 Backers)

  • Van Helsing: Ashes of the Past Omnibus: $53,657 (607 Backers)

What’s a little surprising about these projects is that the top two performers are from first-time Kickstarter accounts, although one of those belongs to indie extreme horror comics legend, Tim Vigil. I’ve been aware of Mr. Vigil’s work and his hardcore fandom since the early 1990’s, with his legendary indie series, Faust. Good to see him metaphorically killing it on Kickstarter and utterly owning the Comics category in February.

Below is a full listing of the top 3 funded comics for each of the top genres (minimum 10 launches), by launch volume and total funding (remember, if the campaign is not for an actual comic book, it doesn’t get entered into my spreadsheet or considered with these statistics):

Action-Adventure ($45,905 total for February):

  • BLADESMYTH: Honor the Blade, Defy the World.: $20,936 (198 Backers)

  • Introducing Blake & Blu: An unlikely friendship set in NYC: $11,013 (19 Backers) ($12K on 7 backers? Bullshit…)

  • Destroying Angel Lumen: 4 Issue Subscription: $$4,578 (89 Backers)

Comedy ($35,137 total for February):

  • Warcorns: Fistful of Rainbows #1-2: $8,063 (145 Backers)

  • What The F*ck Mama!: $4,355 (60 Backers)

  • The Chum Brothers: Know Your Gnomes: $4,346 (122 Backers)

NSFW ($654,582 total for February):

  • PRIVATE DANCE Season One HARDCOVER: Collecting #1-4: $53,420 (617 Backers)

  • HYPERGEIST #1-5: FINAL ISSUE! a NSFW cyberpunk thriller: $49,419 (940 Backers)

  • Taste of Cherry & Deep Inside Cherry - by Larry Welz: $43,833 (535 Backers)

Sci-Fi ($144,551 total for February):

  • Kindred Heavens - Book Three: $36,377 (356 Backers)

  • Sven The Groundhog: Savior From the Stars #1: $14,369 (195 Backers)

  • THE JUMP 1-4 from Screenwriter Rylend Grant: $12,180 (305 Backers)

Superhero ($164,404 total for February):

  • Terror & Fury: Rise of the Night (Issues 1-3): $19,945 (260 Backers)

  • The Hunter #1 - A Superhero-Horror Odyssey: $15,681 (447 Backers)

  • Death of Power 6: $14,187 (356 Backers)

Top 3 Others:

  • The Fool, the Absolute Mad Woman - A Sapphic Thriller comic (Thriller) - $54,601 (833 Backers)

  • THE FEW AND CURSED #11 - A Weird Western Saga 😈 (Western) - $53,035 (1591 Backers)

  • The Unsinkable Ship of Fools by Jonas Goonface (Supernatural) - $30,759 (1849 Backers)

Key Takeaways

  • After impressing with some major league campaigns in January, the Romance genre barely showed up in February, with only 2 (of 3) funded campaigns.

  • Comedy bounced back with 12 launches, albeit with only one funded above $8000, and exactly half of those launches failed. Seems to be a fickle genre, with boom or bust projects.

  • While, surprisingly, the NSFW genre didn’t place a campaign in the top 3 overall for February, Pat Shand’s PRIVATE DANCE Season One HARDCOVER was #4, and the category, as a whole, still more than doubled the total funding of the next-highest genre, which was Horror for February. In fact, there were 14 NSFW projects that funded above the $20,000 mark, while no other genre boasted more than 3 (Horror). Although the full picture shows a diminished NSFW footprint in the Kickstarter Comics category for February, it is still far and away the leader in the crowdfunding clubhouse.

  • Horror comics really exploded from January to February, with 50% more funding on 4 fewer launches, including the 3 monstrous campaigns at the top of its heap, two of which are among the top 3 for all of Kickstarter Comics for the month.
