Since December, 2024, I’ve spent time each day gathering and collating data on each and every crowdfunding campaign launched in the Kickstarter Comics category. Each campaign’s title and direct link goes into an Excel spreadsheet organized by genre, and, as each campaign ends, I enter the final funding amount and number of backers. When all campaigns launched in a particular month are ended, I have summative data on total funding, backer counts, campaign success rates, and other measurables that may then be used for insightful analysis into the current state of the Comics category.

As of now, all projects launched in March, 2025, are ended. So, take a look at the 3 highest funded Comics projects overall for March:

  • Dark Science Volume 1: The City of Giants: $251,665 (262 Backers)

  • 25th Anniversary of Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose Issue! - $129,044 (851 Backers)

  • ZOMBIE TRAMP vs. HACK/SLASH: $126,785 (1460 Backers)

Big names and big budgets dominated the upper end of the Kickstarter Comics category in March, with the top spot going to a gorgeous campaign run by webcomics retailer TopatoCo and the silver and bronze medals awarded to artist Jim Balent and the heavy duty team-up between the female-led cash cow properties of Dan Mendoza and Tim Seeley. More than half-a-million dollar between just these 3 campaigns. Wow.

Below is a full listing of the top 3 funded comics for each of the top genres (minimum 10 launches), by launch volume and total funding (remember, if the campaign is not for an actual comic book, it doesn’t get entered into my spreadsheet or considered with these statistics):

Key Takeaways

  • Funding for Sci-Fi genre comics more than quadrupled from February to March, and that’s with bizarrely identical backer counts (February: 3635; March: 3630). The difference is 20 more Sci-Fi campaigns launched in March and with a much more robust top end of the funding ladder. The top 3 March Sci-Fi campaigns accounted for more than $420,000 in funding.

  • NSFW comics cracked a million bucks in funding in one month, which is…wild…and 34% of all funds raised in the Kickstarter Comics category for March. As if there was any doubt, I give you the real champion of the crowdfunded comics world.

  • Superhero comics crashed back to Earth in March, with 18 fewer launches than February. Capes was the only genre with at least 15 launches to not crack the $100K funding mark, settling at just over $73K. While it’s a sometimes popular genre for Kickstarter launches, the Superhero category simply doesn’t carry funding at the same levels of the other primary genres on Kickstarter.

  • Fantasy comics saw a nearly 50% increase in funding on only 7 more launches in March, cementing the genre as the true 2nd-place category behind only NSFW.
